Lets go crusin'!

When I saw this 50 year old slide,I focused on what shopping center it was(and why my Grandfather took a pic of it?).When my Dad looked at it,he named every car in the lot, including the Nash Metropolitan, the little blue/white car in the front row.Initially,I thought this was the great crusing spot, the Uniontown Shopping Center (home of the Big Mac)but further research suggests it may be Connellsville,Pa.If you know where this is,please let us know as I want to take a "now/then" shot.
My dad looked at the slide and said "They had a classic car show and didn't know it yet!"

  1. I could tell it was Uniontown from the mountains in the back, but didn't know where.

  2. There was a Nash below my house in a field for years that just sat under a slowly rotting tarp. Then one day, like the old dump truck, it was gone.

  3. This Uniontown Shopping Center? http://ow.ly/3ycAN
If I recall it's up on a bluff so either those houses were knocked down for expansion of it's not the same place. And how stupid is it to build another McDonalds right next to the old?

  4. Thats how they do it, usually knocking the old one down after the new one is completed. They did it in Washington that way.

  5. Didn't they put the K Mart on the right of the drug store?

  6. We posted your site to Connellsvillepa (facebook) and Jacque Caringola suggest that this photo is the connellsville shopping plaza on 119 (119 @ Arch street.) I second that suggestion.

  8. I would have to agree that this picture appears to be from the Uniontown Shopping Center that is along Morgantown Street (Old 119). I looked into the Thorofare location and what I could find pointed to one being there.

  9. Great photograph. It's not Uniontown Shopping Center but the lay of the land does suggest that it may be Connellsville.

  10. To All:
Having grown up in Connellsville, PA, I can assure you that this photo is of the Connellsville Shopping Plaza taken around 1961 or 1962 (using the chevy wagon and chevy sedan by the guardrail as reference for the year). You can verify this plaza by standing on the side of 119 (roughly at the entrance ramp to Rite Aid) and lining up the chimneys of the houses in the background. The Thorofare Market is now the Shop 'N'Save and has expanded to the left (as you are looking at the photo) at far as the left side of Gatlings Auto Stores. Between the "Brunswick Tires" sign and the telephone pole to the left, you can see the spire on the building by the I.C. church on Prospect Street. Wonderful photo. Makes me miss the old days!

  12. This is an old post, however as a resident in the area I can verify that the shopping center is the one on RT 119 in Connellsville next to the bridge that goes over the Yough River. The Thrift Drug in the photo eventually became a Valley Dairy restaurant (has since moved to a new location). I miss the old shopping days. Really miss Laurel Mall and Greengate Mall. :-(
