Some great photos of the Crucible Ferry Nekoda!

Sent to us by Facebook follower Shaundra Bissett, these amazing old photos of the Crucible ferry " Nekoda" give a rare glimpse of the ferry in action. Many people have fond memories of the ferry and their family members who relied on it every day! Shaundra writes:

  "I came across your blog and videos the other day.  The crucible ferry was always an interest to me.  I am 47 and as a young girl my dad would take my brother and I down to the ferry and we would play.  This was around 1982 when it was lateral washed on shore.  I can remember it was tethered by huge thick cables.  Anyway I can remember my grandmother telling me my grandfather worked on the ferry, I don't know what year but I was able to find the two pictures I have.  They both have pictures of them with cars on them.  One has a picture of my grandfather standing on the ferry.  The young boy sitting on the waters edge is my uncle so I am guessing these pictures are around the 1950's.  I was so excited to see your blogs about the ferry.  I remember going down to the river after each of the major events to check on it.  Until it was gone."

Fredericktown Ferry Boat Festival - Fredericktown, PA

Saturday, June 25^th … the SWPARE team, consisting of Evan, myself, and junior member Remy, headed to Fredericktown to check out the Bower Brothers Ferry Boat Festival. The Bower Brothers bar, located right next to the ferry landing on Rt. 88 sponsored the town-wide event. The event was just one of many that the Maxwell Basin Recreation Area group has been helping put together to promote and draw new life into the area. Local business took part, as well as the townspeople, in the flea market/yard sale tents, and great food was to be found all over town. And of course, free pedestrian rides from 11a-5p on the ferry!

Upon arriving, we did a quick tour around to see what the vendors were selling, what good eats were to be found. Lots of rummage sales, yard sales, food of al types, and games for children and adults.

After that, we headed off for our (first of quite a few) ride on the ferry. As we headed onto the ferry, free stickers and whistles were given to the kids. Pedestrians lined the sides of the ferry for the free rides and a few vehicles went across during the event. Children tooted happily and adults talked of the ferry’s past and it future.

A little bit of Fredericktown exploring after the ferry rides, including a quick trip to the Fredericktown Library and some fun on a dock and the day was done….

And of course, on a nice day in the summer, everyone likes to have fun on the Mon.....

Vintage photos of Crucible Mine and the Crucible Ferry!!!

Just got these from my good bud,Ed Begovich (long time SWPARE supporter!)More treasures from the Begovich archive! These beatuiful shots of the Crucible Mine and ferryboat Nekoda were taken by his Grandpap Frank Begovich.I estimate these from the mid to late 1940's judging from the cars.Ed says he has more on the way,so keep checking back!!
One bummer,though.Ed's Dad actually witnessed the scrapping of the Nekoda (and may have pics to prove it)So.looks like I'll need to find a new mystery!! Oh,well...enjoy these awesome pics....more soon.Thanks,Ed...again!!
