I remember Dad telling me that it was being pulled by steel cables and being fascinated that it held cars, people and even bycicles. At first it was horrifying to a little boy when Dad drove off of the road onto that ferry. I thought we were going to sink in our car. Than to float on the water and not wash down the river. WOW!! When Dad drove off the Ferry onto the other bank I thought "Too cool Dad". You're the best. I would always look behind me to the other side where we got on board. It was so exciting.
To me it was a time of wonderment. It was growing up and the memory is still fresh in my mind 68 years later. A sweet sorrow. Happy to have lived that experience... sad to have only memories. Truthfully if you want to go to the prison or anywhere else in that part of Fayette county from the Fredericktown, Clarksville, Vestaburg area going all the way to Rt. 43 is the LONG way around. More time, more gas, more frustration.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313728863646854771.post-87158381234640876142015-12-22T10:12:01.590-05:002015-12-22T10:12:01.590-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Kevinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03585602763002676380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313728863646854771.post-13843285697413620292015-12-22T10:07:32.316-05:002015-12-22T10:07:32.316-05:00My dad would talk about this ferry when he worked ...My dad would talk about this ferry when he worked the boats out of Pittsburgh in the 70's. In a strange twist of fate, he ended up a hand on the Seaford ferry in the 90's, also a cable pulled ferry and one of the last. So sad I didn't get the chance to see this one in action.
KL PittsburghKevinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03585602763002676380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313728863646854771.post-42451729668750391552014-06-20T09:50:19.305-04:002014-06-20T09:50:19.305-04:00My father grew up in Connellsville and I remember ...My father grew up in Connellsville and I remember riding the ferry when we visited there as a kid. I live in Delaware on the Delmarva peninsula and we have several cable operated ferries still in use. One in Delaware on the Nanticoke river and two in Maryland - one on the Wycomico river and one on the Choptank river. All three still in operation. The one in Delaware was recently upgraded with a new ferry a couple of years ago.

John Dean II
Milton, DelawareJohn163https://www.blogger.com/profile/11457110775484696192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313728863646854771.post-73054944943020726762013-09-08T14:24:04.769-04:002013-09-08T14:24:04.769-04:00Such a shame I rode that ferry when I was little a...Such a shame I rode that ferry when I was little and my child and her children also my parents and grandparents 5 Generations.
